SC CANCELS 214 COAL BLOCKS, INCLUDING MAHAN.
NGT Cancels mahan's forest clearance
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court de-allocates 214 coal block including Mahan. Following this decision, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) said the forest clearance granted to Essar and Hindalco’s Mahan Coal Ltd is invalid
The SC verdict is a clear acknowledgement of the corruption rampant in the coal sector. Junglistan and its community of over 1 million has been persistently drawing attention to the corruption in the coal sector and urging the Indian government to save India’s forests from coal mining since 2011!
As one of India’s oldest sal forests, Mahan is very valuable. Home to endangered wildlife and with over 5 lakh trees, the forests are a source of livelihood to over 50,000 people from various villages. Besides, with Mahan facing destruction, it won't be too long before forests in the region are destroyed for coal.
The government needs to ensure that clearances for big ticket mining and infrastructure projects are not given in haste without following due process. It must also see to it that Acts such as the Forest Conservation Act, Environment Protection Act and Forest Rights Act are not violated.
Help save the forests of Mahan. And in turn help save India’s forests from dirty and destructive coal.
